If you are a fan of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, you might be interested in downloading the PDF or EPUB version of Soul Wars, a novel by Josh Reynolds that portrays the events in the immediate aftermath of the Necroquake. Soul Wars is the first AoS novel since Wardens of the Everqueen came out in 2015 to closely follow the events of a main GW narrative, this time the new Soul Wars starter set. We see the forces of Nagash pitted against the Stormcast Eternals over the city of Glymmsforge as the dawn of a new war starts.

In this article, we will give you a brief summary of the novel, some quotes from the author and the characters, and a link to download the PDF or EPUB version of Soul Wars for free.

Summary of Soul Wars

The culmination of the Time of Tribulations saw Nagash enacting his Great Work to ensure that all souls of the dead flowed to the Realm of Shyish and the Black Pyramid at Nagashizzar. In the aftermath of that cataclysmic event, Nagash unleashes his Legions against the living in the Realm of Shyish to reclaim not only his own lands but all the Realms beyond. Soul Wars focuses mainly on the conflict for the city of Glymmsforge in Shyish and the Ten Thousand Tombs that it is built above.

The book has a large cast of people, from Stormcast Eternals, Mortarchs and the many undead servants of Nagash all the way through to the gods such as Nagash and Sigmar himself. The primary characters include:

  • Arkhan the Black: Mortarch of Sacrament

  • Balthas Arum: Lord-Arcanum of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer

  • Dathus: Lord-Relictor of the Gravewalkers Chamber of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer

  • Calys Eltain: Liberator Prime of the Gravewalkers Chamber, of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer

  • Elya: Child of Glymmsforge familiar with the labyrinth of the Ten Thousand Tombs. Queen of Cats

  • Knossus Heavensen: Lord-Arcanum of the Hammers of Sigmar

  • Vorgen Malendrek, the Knight of Shrouds

  • Nagash: The Great Necromancer, The Undying king, God of Death

  • Sigmar: The God-King of Azyr and Lord of the Storm Eternal

  • Helios Starbane: Celestor of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer

  • Pharus Thaum: Lord-Castellant of the Gravewalkers Chamber, of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer Stormhost

  • Yaros: Grand Prince and Lord Rattlebone a Deathrattle King.

The story opens with Nagash completing his long laid plans from Malign Portents. With Nagashizzar under siege from orruks, he moves the timetable forward and begins his grand ritual right away. Unfortunately for him, Skaven have infiltrated the black pyramid, and the presence of Chaos throws it askew, but not enough for it to be a total failure. As the magical energies of Shyish are refocused into its center, a ripple of necromantic energy blasts out through the Mortal Realms in what would become known as the Necroquake.

As all of this is happening we are also introduced to Pharus Thaum, a Lord-Castellant of the Anvils stationed in Glymmsforge. There he is tasked with overseeing the protection of the Ten Thousand Tombs, a vast tomb complex buried under the city's heart, left there by Nagash in ancient times. Pharus is probably one of the most human Stormcast I have seen so far. There is a small child, Elya, whom he helped saved in the past, who consistently sneaks past all of his defenses to spend time with him in the crypts. I love his rapport with her, and how much he wishes to protect her. He also has a fondness for apples, which he keeps a supply of to snack on while performing his duties. A Liberator Prime, Calyn, is reassigned under his command at this point as well, a fairly young Stormcast, having only been reforged within the last few years. It's at this point that the Necroquake hits and everything starts to go wrong. We don't see exactly what happens, but Pharus is slain protecting Calyn, and his soul is returned to Sigmaron, just in time for the Necroquake to hit their as well.

The rest of the novel follows the aftermath of the Necroquake, as Nagash's legions rise from the tombs and attack Glymmsforge, while the Stormcast Eternals try to defend it and evacuate the civilians. Along the way, we see how the Necroquake has affected the Mortal Realms, such as creating new types of undead, disrupting the reforging process, and empowering Nagash's magic. We also see how the Stormcast Eternals cope with their losses, their doubts, and their enemies. We also get some glimpses into Nagash's mind and his plans for the future of the Realms.

Quotes from Soul Wars

Here are some quotes from the author and the characters of Soul Wars that give a sense of the tone and style of the novel:

"The first thing that Soul Wars does to sidestep the problems typically associated with a tie in novel to an already established event, to much success I must say, is to not follow the same characters. Knossus and Malendrak are both present in the novel, but they're more relegated to supporting characters, with their plot lines only briefly touched upon. By making this simple change Josh is able to free himself up to do pretty much whatever he wants with the story." - Mengel Miniatures

"Look, Arkhan A void is gnawing at the sky. An absence an unlight. The circle of time is broken all out of joint, and the sun has become as a black tunnel. The sky becomes an inverted mockery of itself a shadeglass reflection. I have made it so. I have willed it. This realm is mine. It is me. Sigmar might be the stars, but I am the darkness that stretches between them. All things recede into me, as motes of light dwindle in the black. I have come into my inheritance at last. There are no other gods before me, my servant. Merely falsehoods, masquerading as divinity. Life, destruction, light, shadow What are these things but preludes to the inevitable? I am become the totality of existence. And I will cast my light upon all these realms." - Nagash

"I am not afraid of you,' said Pharus Thaum. 'You should be,' said Vorgen Malendrek. 'I am not,' said Pharus Thaum. 'You will be,' said Vorgen Malendrek." - Pharus Thaum and Vorgen Malendrek
